Pre-employment functional assessments were developed because the medical examination provides only  information about the candidate’s general health.

With only a medical examination performed, the employer has no information on:

• Whether the candidate can actually manage the specific physical demands of the work
• Whether they have the skills to use their body safely in performing these tasks, and
• How their body reacts to this physiological demand.

The functional assessment provides all this specific information about the candidate.
